Researchers analyzed 54 randomized clinical trials involving
nearly 2,500 participants conducted between 1980 and 2025.
Overall, the evidence did not support cannabis as an effective
treatment for anxiety disorders, PTSD, psychotic disorders, or
opioid-use disorder, and there were no qualifying trials showing
effectiveness for depression. A sweeping review of
cannabis studies over the past 45 years concludes there is little
to no high-quality evidence showing this is effective.
Many people use cannabis to manage mental health conditions, but
large reviews of existing studies find little to no solid
evidence that it effectively treats issues like anxiety,
depression, or PTSD. It also highlights a gap between widespread
real-world use and the lack of rigorous scientific research, with
some evidence suggesting cannabis could even worsen certain
mental health symptoms.
